A DENGUE outbreak will be declared in Central Visayas after health authorities recorded 7,241 cases from January to Sept. 18 this year.
The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) said the figure represented an 18-percent increase since Sept. 18.
The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU)–Central Visayas recorded 1,095 cases in one week alone.
Dr. Jocelyn Abellana, DOH Central Visayas regional dengue coordinator, said the figure also represented a 46.4-percent increase for the same period last year.
Dengue cases were pegged at 4,921 cases with 63 deaths last year.
Abellana said they would meet to discuss the possibility of declaring a dengue outbreak in the region.
Cebu City tops the region with 1,844 dengue cases and 15 deaths followed by Tagbilaran City with 443 cases and three deaths.
They were followed by Lapu-Lapu City with 283 cases and two deaths, Dumaguete City with 270 cases and two deaths, Toledo City with 224 cases and one death and Talisay City with 215 cases and two deaths.
Rounding the top 10 areas were Danao City with 160 cases, Mandaue City with 136 cases, Naga City with 138 cases and Sibulan in Negros Oriental with 125 cases and one death.
Regional DOH-7 Director Dr. Susana Madarieta said they encouraged Cebuanos to clean up their canals and surroundings to destroy the breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Barangays Guadalupe, Labangon, Lahug, Tisa, Apas and Talamban in Cebu City; barangays Cogon, Dao and Taloto in Tagbilaran City, and barangay Basak in Lapu-Lapu City were declared within the dengue epidemic threshold.
While barangays Banawa, Punta Princessa, Sambag II, and Tejero in Cebu City, barangays Bool, Dampas, Manga, Poblacion II of Tagbilaran City and barangays Looc and Pajo in Lapu-Lapu city were considered dengue hotspots.http://ping.fm/f6Jci
